Ma'arouf Al-Rifai, media advisor to the Jerusalem District: "The area adjacent to the western wall ofthe Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount) in particular, is part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and an Islamic waqf (i.e., an inalienable religious endowment in Islamic law). Everything that Israel carries out beneath the Al-Aqsa Mosque, whether in the Umayyad Palaces or at the western wall [of the Mosque], is considered an attack against the waqf and against the Al-Aqsa Mosque, through which Israel wants to impose its sovereignty and control over Jerusalem. It wants to transform these sites… to which Jews have no connection, to transform these historical remains into Jewish remains to add a Jewish identity."
